Laterite roads, angostura, atabrine, and other appurtenances of a great Graham Greene novel

I’ve read The Heart of the Matter, by Graham Greene, and have this to say about it:

Hear of the Matter 02

And this:

Heart of the Matter

And finally, this: it’s funny as hell that Major Scobie commits the worst crime possible by receiving Communion without having been absolved of his mortal sin, and his doom is certain, but in the next chapter he’s promoted to Commissioner.

Now I’m going to scour the online commentaries; otherwise I hardly know what to make of this amazing novel.
