The 2016 Chevrolet Malibu stuns with sleek looks, runs ahead of the pack

Chevy sent me a 2016 Malibu for a week, so I drove up to Morongo Valley and Yucca Valley for some pictures. I’m very favorably impressed with the car.

IMG_4316Note in this sequence the shot of the new one with the previous-generation model at the Morongo Valley post office. The older car looks dowdy.

For 2016, the powertrain is a turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine and 8-speed automatic transmission, and it’s not bad although when I’m cruising along the highway at 60 mph and the trans is in high gear, there’s not much response from the accelerator: you need to be in fifth or even fourth gear, and that’s a lot of (automatic) downshifting. The powertrain is very quiet and smooth, and the cabin–huge, like the trunk–feels rather posh and very nicely put together, although the gray upholstery required the hides of over 1,000 mice.

How about those nice-looking wheels? And the swooping roofline?

The sparkly black paint really works on this car, too. Final assembly occurred in Kansas City (the transmission comes from Japan).

Total price: $29,495.

Nice going, Chevy!
