From underachieving brat to model citizen in a few short weeks of 1967

Seventh grade at St. Pius X was a tough year. I went from A- in arithmetic to D. In the final quarter I had all C’s and D’s. It’s pretty obvious I’d stopped trying.

My problems must have been because of the mean girls. I went to summer session at Thomas A. Edison School, where I was free of preexisting social constraints, and did well.

I was even on summer safety patrol (not much traffic to worry about on 97th Street) and went to swim lessons besides.

Whatever my problem was, it cleared up when I went back to St. Pius X. I remember eighth grade being a good year, although no report card seems to have survived.

  1. You give this mother of teen-aged children hope! I had a couple reports like these too. When I was in 7th grade, I think, I got my first D, and I remember how horrified I was. That term I had evening skiing lessons every week. I remember, on the night of the bad news, I was skiing, and I found D shapes carved out in the snow everywhere I looked. I wondered how in the world I would ever tell my parents (and whether they would ever let me ski again, of course). Thanks for the reminder!
